My family’s roots here run deep. My great-grandfather, Nick Dawson, was an Austin lawyer and legislator who built a streetcar line in South Austin. His sisters, Molly and Nannie Dawson, were pioneer Austin teachers turned real estate developers who built the historic Dawson Stone House on South Lamar around 1900. Dawson Elementary was named for Molly. And Dawson Road here in 78704 carries the name of another relative, Nicholas Mosby Dawson, an early Texas settler and San Jacinto veteran. I lived in 78704 through the ’90s, and now I’m home again. Through that decade, I lived on Post Oak, Bouldin, Christopher and Bluebonnet. Tuesdays meant Toni Price at the Continental Club. Wednesday nights meant free concerts at Auditorium Shores. Weekends meant disc golf at Zilker when the course was brand new. I was there for the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue dedication, and you’d see Jimmie Vaughan, Charlie Sexton and Alejandro Escovedo around the neighborhood. A lot has changed since then, and I know which streets kept their character, which are changing fast, and why. Now I’m back, and I’d love to help you find your place here too.
